SUBJECT: Weekly Whale - April 13, 2026

SPOUT OUTS!

Big thanks to Jen Villani, Colleen Bond, Anna Fleming, and Jess Jay, and Leslie Edelstein for ordering new recess equipment to replace everything lost in the shed fire! Thanks to their quick and thorough response, the students did not have to go even a single day without their usual recess equipment.

Thank you to all of the members of the BHES community who have come together to support the school and one another over the past few days.

SECURITY UPDATES

As you may know, on Friday night an alarming message was graffitied on the BHES tennis court and soccer field. Yesterday afternoon, the PTA held a Zoom meeting together with Mrs. Kemp and MCPS officials, followed by a Zoom meeting including the Montgomery County Policy Department in the evening. Check your inbox for the PTA/BHES/MCPS meeting notes.

Ms. Kemp is sending emails daily linking to information on everything that is being done to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and the community.

Note also that, in an abundance of caution, some school events are being rescheduled or postponed.

WHALE WATCH

SEMINAR FOR PARENTS ON TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT DIFFICULT SUBJECTS (7-8:30PM, ZOOM)

The Bradley Hills PTA is partnering with Triple P – Positive Parenting Program to offer a seminar featuring evidence-based strategies to help parents talk with their children about difficult and distressing topics. The incidents at BHES over the last few weeks can be frightening for both children and adults, often leaving families feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to respond.

Triple P has over 40 years of global research behind it and is a trauma-informed model that equips parents with practical, proven strategies to support their children.

This seminar is designed to provide parents with concrete tools and clear guidance for answering children’s tough questions, understanding their reactions, and helping them cope with distress.

We will also discuss how it is common for children to experience social, emotional, and behavioral challenges following exposure to traumatic events, whether directly or indirectly, through conversations, media coverage, or peers—and how parents can best support their children through these experiences.

Our presenters are Dr. Sara van Driel, a Clinical-Community Psychologist, who has been helping to build communities that support children and families for over 20 years and Courtney Towne, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker,  who has been working in the child and family serving field for over 25 years beginning as a child and family therapist.

Please join us tomorrow, Tuesday, April 14, from 7pm-8:30pm, zoom log in details below.

SAVE THE DATE FOR BRADLEY BEAUTIFUL! (SUN, APRIL 26, 4-6PM)

Come celebrate Earth Day on Sunday, April 26, from 4:00-6:00 at Bradley Hills! This is a school-wide event hosted by the Green Team. Grab your gardening gloves and spades and help make our school beautiful. Mulching, planting and park clean-up will begin at 4:00. From 4:30-6:00 you can enjoy games/activities, food trucks, and the plant sale. We will also have a TREX drop, so please bring your plastic bags to recycle!

THE PTA IS HERE FOR YOU

The BHES PTA is committed to promoting an enriching and supportive climate where all members of the BHES community feel safe, seen, and respected. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee works to advance this goal through educational resources, community conversations, in-school programming, and collaboration with school and county staff. Our focus this year is the Speak Up Strategies to empower our community, students and adults alike, to be upstanders in the face of hate and bias.

The PTA's DEI Committee welcomes input from all members of our community about how we collectively work to prevent and respond to hate-bias incidents within our community. If you are interested in sharing feedback, or joining the DEI Committee, please contact DEI Committee Co-Chairs Nausheen Noor and Kathleen Foster at klubey@gmail.com
