SUBJECT: Weekly Whale - April 19, 2026

SPOUT OUTS!

There are so many people to thank this week--and so much gratitude to go around. Last week, the school administration, staff, and teachers, MCPS, MCPD, the PTA board, the BHEF board, and so many individual parents and families came together with speed and commitment to ensure the safety of BHES students and resolve the security crisis following the weekend's threatening vandalism.

Big thanks to Marissa Morabito who--in addition to efforts throughout the week--brought together the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program seminar with incredible speed to support BHES families.

Spout out to Lauren Mezrahi for organizing the PTA-sponsored breakfast for BHES staff to show the community's support during this incredibly stressful time to be an educator.

Thanks to Maura Lightfoot for leading a mindfulness Zoom last night, which helped create a calm space for families during this difficult time.

SECURITY UPDATES

Last week, MCPD arrested a suspect for the shed arson and threatening graffiti. MCPD has stated that the perpetrator acted alone and there is no longer an active threat.

In the meantime, there have been lasting physical improvements to school security, including new cameras, lights, and door-lock mechanisms.

This week, BHEF will continue to fund off-duty officer support during the school day, including before and after care.

We also encourage parents and guardians who are able to continue serving as recess volunteers to ensure that students and staff alike feel safe and supported after a very stressful week (more information about how to volunteer is below).

The school, PTA, and county will continue to provide updates and support this week and as needed. BHES community members can attend a Zoom meeting with MCPS Leadership this evening for updates (see below for link).

CALLING ALL PARENTS! BHES PTA SEEKING 2026-2027 BOARD & COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS

The Bradley Hills PTA is looking for volunteers to help support our students, teachers, and school community. Whether you have a little time or a lot, there are plenty of ways to get involved and make a meaningful impact on our school community. It’s also a great way to meet other parents and stay connected.

Please take a moment to learn about volunteer opportunities and complete this brief survey by April 15 to express your interest.

Questions? Contact any of the nominating committee members: Dan Reilly: danreilly712@gmail.com, Lisa-Nicole Sarnowski: LND.Sarnowski@gmail.com, Melinda Becker Roach: MelindaJBecker@gmail.com.

BE A RECESS VOLUNTEER TO SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL

Now more than ever, many of us are thinking about ways we can support our school community! One meaningful and immediate way to help is by volunteering during recess. This has always been an important need and we’ve typically had limited volunteer coverage, so having more parents step in would make a real difference. Right now, it’s especially helpful to have extra adults present to support a safe and positive environment for our kids.

If you’re able to volunteer for recess (or lunch), please make sure you review the expectations, complete the required MCPS training (more details in the link that follows) and fill out the BHES agreement form.

To help coordinate coverage, this sign-up sheet shows where help is still needed. Please sign up for as many times that work for you. You can also come whether you've signed up or not! If you’ve completed the steps above, you’re always welcome to volunteer for recess.

Thank you so much to everyone who has shown up for our kids and for our community - it truly makes a difference!

If you have any questions, please email our PTA Board Volunteer Liaison at bradleyhillsvolunteer@gmail.com.

COME TO BRADLEY BEAUTIFUL NEXT WEEKEND! (SUN, APRIL 26, 4-6PM)

Come celebrate Earth Day on Sunday, April 26, from 4:00-6:00 at Bradley Hills! This is a school-wide event hosted by the Green Team. Grab your gardening gloves and spades and help make our school beautiful. Mulching, planting and park clean-up will begin at 4:00. From 4:30-6:00 you can enjoy games/activities, food trucks, and the plant sale. We will also have a TREX drop, so please bring your plastic bags to recycle!

THE PTA IS HERE FOR YOU

The BHES PTA is committed to promoting an enriching and supportive climate where all members of the BHES community feel safe, seen, and respected. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee works to advance this goal through educational resources, community conversations, in-school programming, and collaboration with school and county staff. Our focus this year is the Speak Up Strategies to empower our community, students and adults alike, to be upstanders in the face of hate and bias.

The PTA's DEI Committee welcomes input from all members of our community about how we collectively work to prevent and respond to hate-bias incidents within our community. If you are interested in sharing feedback, or joining the DEI Committee, please contact DEI Committee Co-Chairs Nausheen Noor and Kathleen Foster at klubey@gmail.com
