SUBJECT: Weekly Whale - May 10, 2026

SPOUT OUTS!

Thanks to Katherine Melgarejo for coordinating Teacher Appreciation Week, everyone who participated, and of course to our wonderful BHES teachers!

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed items from teacher and staff Amazon wish lists! These items don't always say who donated them, so you might not hear a thank-you directly - but know that your donation is very much appreciated. These donations have already been a huge help!

Spout out to Maddie Kapur who recommended the EveryMind 988 Awareness Training and helped deliver the training! Thanks to everyone who came to the training! (See below for the 988 fact sheet).

Thanks to the Bradley Hills Educational Foundation for putting on a fantastic fundraising event to support our school! It was worth the wait!

Lastly, Happy Mothers Day to all of the mothers and mother-figures in the BHES community! The Whale hopes that you and your pod are enjoying a relaxing day full of your very favorite variety of krill and the mellow songs of offspring!

WHALE WATCH

BHES SPRING BOOK FAIR IS COMING! (MAY 11-14, BHES MEDIA CENTER)

The Scholastic Book Fair at BHES starts May 11th! A portion of all sales goes to support the Bradley Hills Media Center and the PTA.

Here’s a quick set of answers to your most pressing book fair questions

When can my child buy books?

  • Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday with their teachers/classes (teacher sign up is HERE) Keep in mind times are subject to change at the last minute due to their teaching schedules.

  • Thursday morning on their own if they have payment and a pass from their teacher

Do we need volunteers?

YES! Please sign up HERE.  The volunteer slots are 1 hour slots. Sign up for 1 or more!

When can parents/caregivers buy books?

  • Tuesday May 12 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm in the Media Center

  • During your child's class time - volunteer to help or just stop in

How can we pay for books?

  • Scholastic eWallet, cash, credit card, and Apple Pay are all accepted.

What is an eWallet and how do I set one up?

Scholastic eWallet account is basically a book fair debit account.

  • Set one up for your child HERE.

  • If you set up an eWallet account last year, YOU STILL MUST LOG ON AND REACTIVATE IT. Any remaining money is still available, but does not roll over automatically.

  • To purchase books, your child just needs to share their name with the cashier, or you can print out the eWallet receipt.

  • Once you add money to the eWallet account you cannot be refunded. BUT any leftover eWallet funds will be converted to an e-card balance that you can use on Scholastic.com at any time or during next year’s book fair.

  • Don’t forget to factor in tax when determining how much to include in the eWallet account.

Can I shop online?

Yes! Shop online during May 11 - May 24. 25% of every online purchase directly benefits our school.

Do you have other questions?

Please contact the PTA Book Fair email here: bhesptabookfair@gmail.com

SAVE THE DATE: BHES ART SHOW (MAY 28, 7-8PM)

Calling all artists! Get ready to showcase your creativity at this year's BHES Art Show. We’ll start collecting artwork in the All Purpose Room beginning May 18!

All students are invited to participate by submitting up to two pieces in any medium, not to exceed 24" x 36"

Let your imagination shine—we can’t wait to see your amazing work!

BHES SPIRITWEAR IS BACK!

Our community has been through a whirlwind over the last few weeks, and we have never been as thankful for our PTA (or our Foundation!) as we were during those uncertain days. The PTA organized, advocated, communicated and generally leveraged their talents and efforts to keep our children and their teachers and staff safe and our parent body informed. They held Zoom calls, fed teachers to thank them for their strength and leadership, reordered recess supplies and so much more!

One way we can show our support for the PTA - and our pride in our amazing school community! - is by raising more of the funds that bolster our PTA’s ability to move nimbly. We are relaunching BHES Spiritwear, and links will be from now through Monday, May 18. Shirts will be delivered and distributed either the last week of May or first week of June. Shipping will be free, but all shirts will be shipped to the Spiritwear Committee and distributed from BHES. All items are available for both children and adults. Each logo style is available in a few colors and styles (short or long-sleeved shirts and hooded sweatshirts), so please click through the stock images to locate the color and style you prefer for each logo style.

The BH Maryland State offerings can be found at Bradley Hills Spiritwear: BHES Maryland State Custom Ink Fundraising. This style was recreated by talented BHES parent Ashley Cohen because the original artwork had been lost – thank you, Ashley!

The BH LOVE offerings can be found at Bradley Hills Spiritwear: LOVE Custom Ink Fundraising.

The BH Whale offerings can be found at Bradley Hills Spiritwear: Whale Custom Ink Fundraising. Candidly, the BH Whale offerings require a higher order threshold (26 items) than the other two Spiritwear logo styles. If the BH Whale threshold is not met, the Spiritwear Committee will contact anyone who has ordered a BH Whale item to either help them order a BH Maryland State or BH LOVE item or cancel the order altogether.

We look forward to seeing you and your kiddos representing our wonderful school!

You can reach the Spiritwear Committee at spiritwearBHES@gmail.com with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your support!

CONSIDER SUBMITTING A VICTIM IMPACT STATEMENT (BY MAY 15)

The Court is accepting victim impact statements from BHES families in relation to the arson and vandalism at the school. You can write one using this form.

Victim impact statements are one of the most important ways our school community’s voice can be heard during sentencing, and we have been strongly encouraged to get as many submitted as possible by May 15. The number of statements received may carry significant weight with the Court, even if the statements themselves are brief.

There is no “right” way to write one. Just speak honestly about how these events have impacted your child, family, or sense of safety within our school community.

We understand some may feel more comfortable not including their full name or personal email. Statements can be signed more generally (for example, “A Bradley Hills parent” or “Parent of a 4th grader at Bradley Hills”). Once written, Statements can be submitted in any of the following ways:

  • Emailed directly to alexandra.colindres@montgomerycountymd.gov by May 15th with the subject line: “Bradley Hills ES -- Victim Impact Statement”
  • Emailed to bradleyhillspta@gmail.comby noon on May 15, and we will submit them on your behalf
  • Dropped in the PTA mailbox in the Bradley Hills front officeby noon on Wednesday, May 13, and we will submit them on your behalf.

Thank you to everyone who has already taken the time to support our community in this way.

BHES DOG DAY (MAY 29, DURING RECESS, BHES TENNIS COURT)

Introducing our first ever Dog Day during recess on Friday, May 29th on the BHES tennis court!

Parents are invited to sign up to bring their leashed, well-behaved, socialized, and vaccinated dogs during your student’s recess to mingle and play. The dogs will be on the tennis courts and the event will be optional and open to students who would like to participate.

If you do NOT want your children to participate, please opt-out HERE.

A few things to note for volunteers:

  1. Proof of current rabies vaccination must be emailed to bhesptamembership@gmail.com by May 15.
  2. One dog per slot please
  3. Volunteers must complete required volunteer training.

To add your dog’s name to the list, sign up HERE

VOLUNTEER FOR FIELD DAY (FRI, JUNE 5)

BHES Field Day is coming up, on June 5th! This is always an exciting event to bring the students and teachers together as the year comes to a close.

We need parent volunteers to help the event run smoothly and make sure that it is a great experience for everyone!

If you're able to volunteer, please consider signing up on this signup sheet

RSVP FOR MCPS COMMUNITY OF CARE EVENT - PIZZA, CONNECTION, AND CONVERSATION (MAY 20, 6-8PM, BHES APR)

Pizza, Connection, and Conversation is a family evening at Bradley Hills Elementary that brings caregivers, staff, and students together to explore how we can build a strong, supportive community of care.

Centered around “We Are the Builders” by Deepa Iyer, the evening introduces the idea that a thriving community is built through many roles—and the ways we support and show up for one another every day.

Students will take part in age-appropriate activities exploring these roles—from coloring for younger grades to a “Dream Big” brainstorming session for older students. At the same time, caregivers will join small-group conversations using real-life scenarios, with a focus on practical, supportive ways to respond—both with children and with one another.

There will be separate sessions for students and parents/caregivers, all designed to be engaging, accessible, and grounded in real-life situations.

When: Wednesday, May 20. Pizza and refreshments at 6:00 PM, followed by programming at 6:30 PM
Where: Bradley Hills APR & Media Center
Hosted by: Bradley Hills PTA, in collaboration with MCPS staff and community volunteers

EVERYMIND 988 AWARENESS TRAINING - FACT SHEET

Last Monday, EveryMind delivered a 988 Awareness Training for the BHES community. The team shared a fact sheet with participants, which you can access here.

THE PTA IS HERE FOR YOU

The BHES PTA is committed to promoting an enriching and supportive climate where all members of the BHES community feel safe, seen, and respected. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee works to advance this goal through educational resources, community conversations, in-school programming, and collaboration with school and county staff. Our focus this year is the Speak Up Strategies to empower our community, students and adults alike, to be upstanders in the face of hate and bias.

The PTA's DEI Committee welcomes input from all members of our community about how we collectively work to prevent and respond to hate-bias incidents within our community. If you are interested in sharing feedback, or joining the DEI Committee, please contact DEI Committee Co-Chairs Nausheen Noor and Kathleen Foster at klubey@gmail.com
