BHES READ-A-THON
We are excited to have our Readathon again this year and our students are excited too! The Readathon has been activated and will run through January 9th. The purpose of the Readathon is to motivate students to reach reading goals, to bring our community together in celebration of literacy, and to raise funds for our school and for our community outreach programs. Last year, students logged 193,972 reading minutes and raised $11,132.13! On Friday, December 17th, the Readathon committee visited classrooms to get students excited about the Readathon, and flyers, stickers, and bookmarks were sent home. Please check Whale Folders!
We will use the same online program, www.read-a-thon.com to track reading and facilitate the transaction of donations from sponsors. Students will have individualized pages so that they can track and share achievements with their families, teachers, and sponsors. Students can get started logging minutes and getting sponsors as soon as they create their pages.
In order to encourage friendly competition, two teams were created: Blue Whales and Humpbacks which can be found near the media center. Each group is composed of one or two classrooms per grade. Two bookworms in the school hallway will track the minutes read by each team. Paper circles will represent the amount of minutes read by each team and will grow daily along the hallway. Have fun reading!

SPELLING BEE
Mark your calendars for the Bradley Hills Spelling Bee! Classroom bees for fourth and fifth graders will be held on January 19 and 21. Each classroom winner and runner-up will be eligible to compete in the BHES schoolwide bee on the evening of February 10. The BHES spelling bee winner will go on to represent the school in the regional bee and have a chance to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals.

2022 Scripps Book Selections
This is a great BHES tradition and requires parent volunteers to help run the classroom bees each year. If you are available for an hour on either January 19 or 21, please let us know. Any BHES parent can volunteer. You'll be trained on how to run a classroom bee, and it is a fun, limited time commitment. Please contact PTA Spelling Bee committee chair Tomoko Mullaney at tomoko.hosaka@gmail.com for more information.
