SUBJECT: Weekly Whale 11/6

SPOUT OUTS!

Thank you to our BHES community for your generous in-kind and online donations to the Manna Food Center food drive in support of food-insecure families in Montgomery County! We filled an SUV with food and raised more than $1,600. Thank you also to Veronica Velez-Burgess, Melissa Davis, and Sarah Zetterli for coordinating the food drive. Kudos to Jen Villani for coordinating a successful Geography Bee! Finally, a round of applause to everyone who made the Book Fair possible: Sharon Hanna, Jim Luh, Jessica Ryckman, Julie Lobb, Soumya Korde, and all the parents who volunteered for shifts!

GREEN TEAM UPDATES

Recycling Programs: Did you know that your student can recycle prescription eyeglasses, batteries, markers, pens, and glue sticks at school? Pens, markers, batteries, and glue sticks are sent to the sustainability department of MCPS, which enables us to recycle items that can't be readily recycled through the Montgomery County Recycling Service. We are also working with the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington to collect used eyeglasses to help people who cannot afford eyeglasses in the DC area and in other countries. For more information, visit youreyes.org. Please place items in the box in the front foyer of BHES or the box in front of Mrs. Hicks’ classroom.

Trex: Starting November 15th you can also begin sending plastic bags and other plastic film for the Trex plastic film recycling challenge (see attached flier for details). Help BHES join other schools across the country in collecting and recycling plastic film and compete to recycle the most film by April 15th.

Compost Kudos: Our compost program is off to a terrific start; BHES students should be so proud of what they accomplished in the very first month of school! Students were able to divert 505 lbs of food from landfills and incinerators in September. See the attached report for how this translates to offset equivalents.

Thank you! - Green Team
