Similar to last year, the Green Team will lead a beautification project at the school that is open to all students and families and we will celebrate Earth Day with environmentally-focused activities and food vendors. Please bring your gardening gloves as the beautification project will include mulching and will take place from 2 to 3 pm followed by games and activities from 3 to 5 pm.

In parallel, we will also have the annual plant sale. From April 22-29 use the promo code BHES2023 at https://denchfieldnursery.com/discount/BHES2023 for online orders and 15% of the sales go to the BHES Green Team.

BHES BOOK FAIR (APRIL 24-27)

The BHES PTA Book Fair is happening from April 24-27! This fair's theme is "Bolder Stronger Prouder Reader." We have contests and fun activities planned to celebrate! Shopping may be done in-person by students and by parents daily from 9:15a - 2:30pTeachers will be bringing students to the fair as a class. Parents may join their students during their class shopping time. Look for email communication from the teachers regarding your student's shopping day/time. Sign-in at the front office before heading to the media center to meet your student.

Parents and students can come shop outside of school hours on Tuesday, April 25 from 6-8 PM.

Want to help out with the fair?

  • *Volunteer*: We're still seeking volunteer parents to help staff the fair for set-up, class visits, and pack-up. Volunteers must complete the child abuse and neglect training and show proof of vaccination. Click here to volunteer:

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080F4CABAC2AA4FA7-bhes6

  • Purchase Books: The easiest way to help is to purchase books during the classroom book fair visits. Scholastic rewards a generous percentage of our sales back to us as Scholastic Dollars, which are used to purchase books for our media center and classrooms. More than one of our recent in-person fairs provided over $5000 worth of books to our school, all purchased with our rewards!
  • Purchase books for Teachers: Another way to help is to purchase books for classroom libraries. Books chosen by our teachers will be available for purchase at the fair.

Set up an eWallet: eWallet is an easy way to send your child to the fair with money in an online account, where it can't be lost. Please visit our fair homepage to set up an eWallet for your child before their class visits, or to check or reload the balance on an existing eWallet. Please note that funds added to an eWallet that aren't used will be available for use at Scholastic.com and/or at a later BHES PTA Book Fair, but will not be refunded.

*A note on online purchases: You can also support the school by shopping online from https://www.scholastic.com/bf/bhessbf.

We will have votes to approve a summer budget and next year's board and will spend the bulk of the meeting hearing updates on the MCPS anti-racist audit findings from school administration and discussing issues around diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for families of all facets of identity -- including our families who are from racial/ethnic or religious minorities, who are LGBTQI+, who have disabilities, and who are from outside of the United States.

SCREENING AND Q&A OF SCREENAGERS UNDER THE INFLUENCE: ADDRESSING VAPING, DRUGS, AND ALCOHOL (MAY 4, 7-9PM, WALT WHITMAN HIGH SCHOOL)

Girls on the Run of Montgomery County in partnership with Suburban Hospital is proud to be the East Coast Premier for this important documentary. Screenagers Under the Influence: Addressing Vaping, Drugs, and Alcohol in the Digital Age delves into how the tech revolution has reshaped adolescence and its effects on substance use. The film debunks myths and depicts strategies parents and schools can use to encourage healthy decision-making, support teen mental health, set limits, and create healthy home environments. The film also includes many ways young people are using their wisdom and strength to help each other and themselves through this complicated terrain around substance use.

While most documentaries about substance use focus on severe addiction, Screenagers Under the Influence fills a pressing need for a film that explores more common scenarios. The film is grounded in teens' current reality of being flooded by images on social media, movies, and TV shows about vaping, drugs, and alcohol.

"Screenagers Under the Influence" interweaves cutting-edge science with personal stories to create an informative and entertaining film experience for young people and adults alike. Screenagers Under the Influence focuses on practical solutions for keeping our teens safe in a changing world.

Girls on the Run will host a screening at Walt Whitman High School auditorium in Bethesda, MD on Thursday, May 4th, 2023. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the screening will begin at 7 PM followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and experts in the field of addiction. The evening will conclude at 9 PM.

The film is intended for parents and their middle school and up children. Tickets for the screening are $10 for adults and $5 for students with the discount code: STUDENT. Tickets can be purchased at this link (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/screenagers-under-the-influence-maryland-premier-tickets-602609018797)
