Our last Whalemart of the school year will be held this Friday, June 2nd, from 8:30-9:00, on the blacktop at BHES. We’ll have plenty of fun merchandise and all items will be $1.00!  We hope to see many of you there.

***For students who plan to arrive on the early side at 8:30 am, an adult must stay with them at school until the doors open at 8:45.  For bus riders who want to shop, they can walk through the building out to the blacktop.

LAST CHANCE TO VOLUNTEER AT THE MEDIA CENTER!

Although the last day to checkout books has passed, your kids will still be visiting the Media Center at their scheduled times and Ms. Park can still use your help!  Volunteers are greatly appreciated during class sessions or you may come in at any point to help reshelve books (there will be many coming in!) and making sure they are in the correct spot.  If you would like to help out, please email claire.hazard@gmail.com and/or Amie_Schwartz@mcpsmd.org

WELLNESS WEEK HIGHLIGHTS

We celebrated wellness this week at BHES, and wanted to highlight some information that students received in the hope that it encourages family conversations. Enjoy!  - BHES PTA Wellness Committee

Smoothie Recipe: Students wanted us to share the smoothie recipe we made at school on Monday. Ingredients: frozen blueberries, strawberries, bananas, kale, spinach, oat milk plus fresh banana. Eat the rainbow in a smoothie!

Martial Arts Assembly: Ask your student about the assembly on Wednesday. Master Method Academy’s Grand Master Marco, a ten-time Karate World Champion, spoke about how he came to the U.S. from Chile to follow his dream of becoming a Karate World Champion. He succeeded despite having a very challenging experience (he was homeless at one point). He contributes his success to being kind and he prides himself in being an upstander.

Grand Master Marco spoke about kindness, compassion, self-confidence, positivity, concentration, and respect. It was remarkable to hear a martial arts champion speak to students about non-violence.

Sleep: Remember that students need between 9 and 12 hours of sleep for night!

Mindfulness: Here is the guided meditation that students learned at school: Take a moment to find a sense of calm. Find a seat and take a moment to be quiet. Sit comfortably in your chairs. Close your eyes or rest them in a way that feels comfortable. Put both hands on the table. Take slow deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. As you breathe out, pretend that you are slowly blowing out all the candles on your birthday cake. Take 5 deep breaths in and with each breath out, imagine blowing all the candles out. Maybe make a secret wish with your candle-blowing last breath. [Count 1…2…3…4…5…slowly]. Think about someone you feel loved by, someone who you know wants the very best for you and cares for you deeply. It can be one person, or two or even three! Think about them, and about the love that they have for you. Now take five more deep breaths. Deep breaths in through your nose, and out through your mouth. Try to feel and breathe the love that that person or people have for you and breathe it into your whole body. As you breathe out relax your body and imagine all that love sitting beside you and all around you. Imagine how good it feels to have so much love in you, for you, and all around you. Thank you for practicing loving kindness meditation today. Guided Imagery, Mindfulness and other Loving Kindness guided meditations can help reduce stress, increase coping, produce feel-good chemicals in our brain, and give ourselves a chance to let go of the worries of the future, the regrets of the past, and focus on the present moment. In this moment we are connecting with our minds, bodies and souls. Have a great day!
