CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH THIS WEEKEND
Juneteenth gets its name from the combination of “June” and “Nineteenth,” the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas were freed, some 2 ½ years AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation. While it only became a Federal holiday in 2021, this celebration of hope and independence has been observed by African Americans since the late 1800s. Did you know that the Scotland community of Potomac was one of the first places freed slaves owned land in Montgomery County?
